Summer Reading Program
Welcome to the Schurz Reading List

Each class level has been given a choice of readings.  Select the book that appeals to you from your grade level.  In the fall you will be expected to take and pass an Accelerated Reader quiz.  If you would like, you may read more than one book.

Freshmen

Anderson, Laurie Halse. Speak A traumatic event near the end of the summer has a devastating effect on Melinda's freshman year in high school.

Bloor, Edward. Tangerine Paul, who lives in the shadow of his football-hero brother, fights for his right to play soccer despite his near-blindness.

Buss, Fran Leeper. Journey of the Sparrows Riveting novel that portrays the plight of three Salvadoran children who enter the country illegally.

Draper, Sharon M. Romiette and Julio Romiette, an African-American girl, and Julio, an Hispanic boy, discover that they attend the same high school after meeting on the Internet.

Ellis, Deborah. Mud City Fourteen-year-old Shauzia, has escaped the misery of her life in Kabul, only to end up in a refugee camp in Pakistan. She still dreams of seeing the ocean and making a new life in France. This dream has sustained her through the terrible years in Kabul.

Jian, Ji-li. Red Scarf Girl A memoir of the Cultural Revolution in China.

Namioka, Lensey. Ties that bind, Ties that Break Ailin's life takes a different turn when she defies the traditions of upper-class Chinese society by refusing to have her feet bound.

Sophomore

Beals, Melba Pattillo. Warriors Don’t Cry Abridged version of the firsthand account of the battle to integrate Little Rock's Central High in 1957.

Barker, Clive. The Thief of Always Holiday House has stood for a thousand years, welcoming countless children into its embrace. When the house shows its darker face, Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows.

Blanco, Jodee. Please stop Laughing at Me The author, a victim of bullying, provides an account of her miserable school career, telling how her experiences as an outcast affected her life, and sharing her perspective on the events as an adult.

Draper, Sharon M. Battle of Jericho A high school junior and his cousin suffer the ramifications of joining what seems to be a "reputable" school club.

Gaines, Ernest J. A Gathering of Old Men This book depicts the racial tension that arises over the death of a Cajun farmer at the hands of a black man, in Louisiana during the 1970s.

Myers, Walter Dean. Fallen Angels Seventeen-year-old Richie Perry, just out of high school, enlists in the Army in the summer of 1967 and spends a devastating year on active duty in Vietnam.

Tiernan, Cate. The Coven Seventeen-year-old Morgan makes a surprising discovery: witchcraft is an intrinsic part of who she is--and who she will become!

Junior

Boom, Corrie Ten. The Hiding Place This true story of two sisters sent to a Nazi concentration camp for helping Jews tells how their faith helped them to overcome its horrors.

Klass, David. You Don't Know Me Fourteen-year-old John creates alternative realities in his mind as he tries to deal with his mother's abusive boyfriend, his crush on a beautiful but shallow classmate, and other problems at school.

Krakauer, Jon. Into thin Air An account of Jon Krakauer's climb of Mount Everest in one of the most deadliest seasons in the history of Everest.

McBride, James. The Color of Water A Black man's tribute to his white mother.

Santiago, Esmeralda. When I was Puerto Rican This book is the memoirs of the author's childhood and youth in Puerto Rico and New York City.

Tolkien, JRR. The Hobbit This stirring adventure is a fantasy that introduces the far-wandering hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

Senior

Alvarez, Julia. In the Time of the Butterflies The story of three sisters murdered in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s because of their religious and political beliefs.

Capote, Truman. In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and its Consequences This book recreates the slaying of the Clutter family of Kansas, and the capture, trial, and execution of their murderers.

Deem. James M. Bodies from the Bog Describes the discovery of bog bodies in northern Europe and the evidence that their remains reveal about themselves and the civilizations in which they lived.

Grisham, John. Bleachers When his old coach dies, high school football star Neely Crenshaw returns to his hometown after fifteen years, reunites with his former teammates, and struggles to resolve his mixed feelings about the man.

Read, Piers Paul. Alive: Story of the Andes Survivors Incredible true story of a band of crash survivors isolated in the high Andes, and how they survived by resorting to cannibalism.

Rice, Anne. Interview with the Vampire This book presents the confessions of Louis, a vampire, and tells of his relationship with the vampire Lestat.

Wright, Richard. Black Boy (American Hunger) This is the autobiography of a Southern Negro who yearned for intellectual and physical freedom. It contains Part One: Southern Night and Part Two: The Horror and the Glory.
