Schurz High School has one of the most comprehensive high school music curriculums in the State of Illinois, with a tradition of music history and instruction for over one hundred years. The Schurz music faculty, all of whom are professional musicians, are supported by an extension of private music teachers. We are able to provide teaching and performance in all aspects of music.

Since music education crosses all academic disciplines, the Schurz Music Academy prepares students for a large variety of life experiences. Each music academy student carries courses that meet or exceed college requirements. College scholarships are available to music major students, even to those not majoring in music in college.

The Schurz Music Academy participates in many programs that enhance our students’ chances for success in music. One such program is the Jazz Mentors Program sponsored by the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. Schurz students annually participate in the Chicago Public Schools’ All-City performing groups and in solo and ensemble contests.

The Schurz Band, Orchestra, and Chorus consistently earn superior and excellent ratings in competition. These groups are featured in performances in school and have provided entertainment for civic groups, parades, dinners, and luncheons throughout the city.
